BATHUA (Chenopodium album)

It is also known as all good or goose foot. It is mainly eaten in the form of saag and in raita. It is rich in vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. The leaves are edible and delicious, with an earthy, mineral- can be compared rich flavour that to spinach. According to Ayurveda, the whole herb is generally used as medicine. It improves appetite. It is oleaginous, anthelmintic, laxative (at over dose), diuretic, aphordisiac and tonic. It is useful in treatment of gastric pains, eye & throat infections, piles and blood pressure. The leaves which are used to treat roundworms. The powered leaves are used externally as an antiseptic and the leaf juice is used to relieve burns. The leaves and stems, mix up with liquor is used as a rub to relieve arthritis and rheumatism. The seeds of this herb are also used to cure hepatic disorders and spleen enlargement. It contains amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fibre. Bathua juice/ras gives instant energy and keeps you hydrate. It’s very easy to cook like rice in few minutes.

Benefits & Treatments

Jaundice- Mix bathua and giloy ras in equal amount and take 20- 25 gm daily twice a day.

External Swelling: Steam bathua leaves and apply at place of swelling that help to reduce swelling.

Internal swelling: Eating bathua saag, it helps to reduce internal swelling.

Kidney stone: its very effective and useful in kidney stone problem. Take leaves with branches and grind them to extract its juice and take it 12-16 gm daily. This also reduces size of stone.

Irregular mensuration period: Take bathua seeds and sonth (dry ginger powder) make powder 20-25  gm boil in 500 ml of water when it reduces to 100 ml drain it and drink twice a day.

Anemia: Take bathua leaves ras 20-25 gm daily help increase blood.

UTI (urinary tract infections): Take 10 gm of bathua leaves ras add 50 ml of water and take with misri (candy sugar) take regularly.

Blood purification: Taken bathua ras with 4-5 neem ras, it works as a blood purifier.

Bathua also use for treatment of skin related diseases, oil made by bathua leaves is used to treat worms. Its contain vitamin A, B-complex, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, minerals, iron and fibre.

Note: Eat bathua in moderate amount, it consuming to much may result in diarrhea. It is said that pregnant women should not eat Bathua as it may result miscarriage.
